At some point in their very young lives, nearly all babies suffer from diaper rash. Usually the rash can be treated and eliminated with the use of standard store-brand topical creams or even simple home remedies. However, in some cases, it is obvious that the baby does not have a typical diaper rash. Most often, what the baby does have is a a yeast infection. Luckily there are many yeast diaper rash treatment options available. A yeast diaper rash is scientifically called candida albicans. It often occurs due to the softening of the skin due to moisture, in addition to the bacteria from the intestinal tract that invade the damaged skin. However, it can also be transmitted from a caregiver. It appears as a raised, red rash located around the genitalia. As it progresses, it will get very defined borders and satellite bumps will appear a short distance from the main rash within the diaper area. There are many yeast diaper rash treatment options available from which to choose when trying to eliminate this irritating rash from your baby's bottom. Home Remedies A few suggested home remedies to try for yeast diaper rash treatment are to air out the baby's bottom in the sunshine. A full-spectrum light bulb also works if direct sunlight is not available. Since yeast thrive in dark areas, the light helps eliminate this environment. Another suggestion is to use a very weak vinegar solution of 1 tablespoon of white vinegar with 1 cup of water. Use a cotton ball to apply, but DO NOT use on open sores. Plain, unsweetened yogurt may also be an effective yeast diaper rash treatment. It can be eaten (as long as the child is at least 6 months old) or it can be applied topically. Medicinal Treatments Many pediatricians recommend using Lotrimin or another over-the-counter anti-fungal as a yeast diaper rash treatment. Just be sure not to use one that contains steroids unless specifically directed to do so. Some people, doctors included, may also suggest using acidophilus powder as the yeast diaper rash treatment of choice. It too can be used externally by making a paste or it can be ingested. Just be sure to follow the directions specifically for infants. Finally, Nystatin is a prescription anti-fungal that can be used, but most people feel it is no more effective as a yeast diaper rash treatment than cheaper over-the-counter medicines. Prevention There are also some precautionary measures that can be taken to lower the chances of getting a yeast infection, as well as slow down or halt its progression. Using disposable diapers seems to help reduce the chances of needed a yeast diaper rash treatment because the gel within the diaper helps to pull the moisture away from the skin keeping it healthier and free from infections.
